Mosques in Brunei Become the Focus for Tarawih Prayers During Ramadan

by Irwanshah

BERAKAS – Mosques across Brunei are seeing large numbers of worshippers during the holy month of Ramadan. Muslims gather every night to perform Solat Sunat Tarawih after the Isyak prayer. Families, young people, and the elderly can be seen filling the mosques during this special time.

The Tarawih prayer, which is offered exclusively during Ramadan, typically begins around 8:30 p.m. after the Isyak congregational prayer and can last anywhere from 45 minutes to over an hour, depending on the length of Quranic recitation chosen by the imam. The sight of rows upon rows of worshippers—shoulders to shoulder in the traditional manner is a powerful reminder of how deeply Ramadan is woven into the social and spiritual fabric of Bruneian life.

Increasing Worship During Ramadan

For Muslims, Ramadan is a unique month. A lot of people use this chance to raise their ibadah. For many Muslims in Brunei, offering Tarawih prayers at the mosque has become a significant daily ritual. It is a time for introspection, prayer, and asking Allah for blessings.

In Brunei, the government and religious authorities, under the guidance of the Ministry of Religious Affairs (Kementerian Hal Ehwal Ugama), actively encourage greater participation in acts of worship during this period. Special Ramadan timetables are issued to mosques across all four districts, outlining prayer schedules, imams on duty, and programmes for the night.

Beyond the spiritual rewards, Tarawih prayers serve as a way for the community to reconnect. Many worshippers make it a point to attend every single night of Ramadan, treating it as both a personal commitment and a communal one. Young children often accompany their parents, learning the rhythm of the prayers from an early age. For older worshippers, the nightly gathering is a cherished tradition that they have maintained for decades one that connects them to their heritage and to those who prayed alongside them in years past.

Mosques Become Community Gathering Places

Mosques often become hubs for community gathering during Ramadhan. Families and friends attend to pray together. Following prayers, some mosques host religious lectures and Quran recitations. The dedication of Brunei’s Muslim community is demonstrated by the large attendance at Tarawih prayers. During the holy month, the mosque provides a serene location for many individuals to deepen their faith and ask for blessings.
