Muara Beach Campaign

MUARA – A beach clean-up campaign was held at Pantai Muara, bringing together volunteers from Belia Daerah Temburong with the Ministry of Finance and Economy.

Pantai Muara is one of Brunei’s most visited public beaches and a cherished recreational spot for both locals and tourists. Recognising the importance of keeping such spaces clean and healthy, Belia Daerah Temburong partnered with the Ministry of Finance and Economy to organise this year’s campaign, combining the energy of young volunteers with the institutional support and resources of a government ministry. The collaboration reflects a growing national commitment to environmental stewardship, with community groups and government agencies working hand in hand rather than in isolation.

The public and young people strongly supported the campaign. Together, volunteers cleaned the beach and gathered trash .Volunteers arrived in the morning armed with gloves, rubbish bags, and a shared sense of purpose. Working in organised groups, they spread out across the beach and into the surrounding forested areas, tackling litter that ranged from everyday plastic waste and food packaging to larger discarded items that had washed ashore or been left behind by previous visitors. The work was physically demanding, particularly in the heat, but the mood remained upbeat throughout, with participants encouraging one another and taking pride in the visible transformation of the shoreline as the hours passed.

The strong turnout from young people was particularly encouraging. For many of the youth volunteers, taking part in an environmental campaign of this kind is not just about picking up litter it is about developing a sense of responsibility for the natural spaces they have grown up alongside. Seeing peers and community leaders working side by side sends a clear message that caring for the environment is a shared duty, and one that the younger generation is ready to take on.

A clean beach attracts more visitors and supports tourism. This helps improve the local economy. A clean beach boosts tourism and draws more people. The local economy benefits from this. The campaign highlights how crucial it is to cooperate in order to save the environment for coming generations.

Pantai Muara is among the beaches that Bruneians most frequently visit on weekends and public holidays, and it is also a destination that features in travel guides and tourism itineraries for visitors to the country. A well-maintained beach with clean sand, clear water, and litter-free surroundings makes a strong impression on first-time visitors and encourages return visits—both of which translate directly into spending at nearby food stalls, rest areas, and local businesses. The connection between environmental cleanliness and economic vitality is not abstract; it is felt in a very practical way by the traders and communities who depend on visitor footfall.

The campaign highlights how crucial it is to cooperate in order to save the environment for coming generations. As Brunei continues to champion environmental sustainability as part of its national development agenda, campaigns like this one serve as a timely reminder that the most lasting change begins at the community level. Pantai Muara belongs to everyone and with that shared ownership comes a shared responsibility to protect it, not just for those who visit today, but for the generations who will come after.
